  6. In North Korea, American tourists are being held for hard labor jail time. There are currently three Americans in North Korea being held, Jeffrey Fowle, Mathew Todd Miller, and Kenneth Bae. Miller was taken into custody just after arriving in the country, in April. It is said that he tore up his tourist visa, begged for asylum, and had claimed to have secret information about the US troops stationed in South Korea. During his prosecution, it was said the pleas for asylum were a ruse and he had no information about the troops. In the end the courts said miller tour up his visa so he could see the North Korean human rights situation, and miller was issued six years of hard labor. The United States has requested that the three Americans be given amnesty and immediate release.
In North Korea the people try to find or make ways to imprison Americans or anyone from a country that they say doesn’t belong. This is very similar to the way the whites treated the blacks during reconstruction. In North Korea, Jeffery Fowle was arrested for leaving a bible in a restroom, his sentence is yet to be determined, but you can see how the North Koreans will imprison an American because of a very small thing. During reconstruction the whites would try to find ways to get blacks sent to jail or punished in some way, just because of their race. Many laws were made specifically for blacks to follow, making it easier for one to make a small mistake and go to jail for it. Some of these laws were the Jim Crow Laws. What is going on in North Korea is very similar to how we treated the African Americans during reconstruction.

  7. Primary Source Blog

Summary: In these two articles it talked about the building of the transcontinental railroad. One article explained about the railroad act. How they were building a railroad and a telegraph line from West of Greenwich to western boundary of Nevada. The two railroad companies Union Pacific and Central Pacific should start at either end of the line and work toward the middle. They will meet up and connect the two lines together there. The US would pay each company a thousand dollars thirty years after the date they finish. The other primary source talked about the last pike being put in the railroad. The Chinese laid the rail from the west and the Irish laid them from the eastern end. They would meet in the middle to combine together put the last spike in the tracks. Nevada presented the last silver spike and California the last golden spike each on behalf of their state. A silver sledge was presented to strike the s[pike and a prayer was offered. When they went to hit down the spike for the first time they missed and hit the rail, later two engineer’s went and drove the spike down. The country celebrated the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The Pacific and Atlantic were now joined together.

History Synthesis: These two documents showed there was a lot of work and also excitement when the railroad was in progress and completed. The railroad was a long stretch between the two sides of the US. There was a lot of work to put in to building the railroad. Union Pacific and Central Pacific had many immigrants working on this for the expansion of the West. There was also much excitement to finishing this railroad. Such as the last pike being put in place. The country celebrated and broadcasted it through the nation. It was a big deal finishing such a long railroad. These sources showed how the complication of the railroad was a big success and a lot of work to finish it.

  8. Primary Source

Summary: The first primary source is a picture that shows two trains with large hands reaching each other that say, San Francisco and New York. There are buffalo and Indians running away. There are people on the trains and they are happy and celebrating. On the bottom its say, “ Does not such a meeting make amends?” The second primary source talks about how great it was when the railroad was finished. It talks about how happy people were and how they werent to celebrate until they told people they were done. People were so happy to be connecting the coasts.

History Synthesis: These two primary sources show that some people were upset about the railroad and some were very happy. In the first source, its a picture of the trains meeting and indians and buffalo running away. It shows how the railroad took their land. Some people were upset that people thought it was okay to take their land, because they were making the railroad. The second source talks about how great it was that they were finally finishing the railroad. It talks about how excited everyone was to have the railroad finished and to be connecting the coasts. They weren't exactly thinking about how it affected the indians and buffalo. That caused some people to get mad. During this era people had mixed emotions about the railroad.

  9. Primary Source

Summary:These two drawings are from when the Transcontinental Railroad was being built. The first Primary Source shows two trains with hands coming out of the front coming together. The one train says New York on it and the other says San Francisco. In front of the two trains there is a group of buffalo running away and a group of indians running away. In the second picture it also shows two trains coming together. In front of these two trains is a group of homesteaders, a group of indians, and a group of cowboys. The difference in this photo is that these three groups are sitting and watching the trains come together.

History Synthesis: These two Primary sources are about the same thing but the people who drew them portrayed the event very differently. In the first document it illustrated the time when the two parts of the transcontinental railroad joined together and united the coasts. In this photo the artists drew buffalo running showing how when the railroad was being built the buffalo population was lowering because they needed the land they lived on. In the same photo Native Americans were also running for the same reason, the government took their land because they needed room for their railroad. In the second primary source it brought to life the same event, when the railroad was being joined together. But the difference is that in this picture the artist decided to paint the indians and cowboys standing and watching it being finished, This photo sends a different message. This photo is saying that the indians and cowboys were not mad about the railroad but they weren't happy either. These two pictures showed me that people had many different views on what happened when the railroad was joined together.

  10. Summary: My first primary source is a popular cartoon by Thomas Nast, published in 1874 in Harper’s Weekly. The carton shows a white southerner and a member of the KKK holding a flag together. On the flag is a picture of a family of scared-looking black people, kneeling on the ground. Behind the family is a person that has hung themselves and a burning school house. Above the flag are a skull, an eagle, and the words “The Union as it was.” My second primary source is a Freedman’s Bureau article from 1866. This shows a monkey-looking creature that’s supposed to be a black person, lounging on the ground. In the background it shows white people doing hard labor. The heading of the article describes the negatives of The Freedman’s Bureau, and how black people are gaining at the expense of white people. It explains how the Freeman’s Bureau was “twice vetoed by the president, and made law by congress”.
Historical Synthesis: Both of these cartoons just scratch the surface of what went wrong after President Lincoln’s assassination. The white southerner and KKK member in the Thomas Nast cartoon show who had power during this time. The scared black people showed who was severely disrespected with no one to stick up for them. The school house burning down in the background represented the mass destruction of property going during this time period. In the second primary source, the deformed version of the black person shows how much they were hated, and not looked at as people, but as animals. White southerners were so against the Freedman’s Bureau (which was an agency that helped black people gain new opportunities) that they felt it was putting black people before them in the eyes of the government, in which case, it was quite the opposite. Both of the sources represent the issues and obstacles that went on during the period of reconstruction.

  11. Ebola is a very easily spread, very severe illness. The disease is spread originally through fruit bats, but any contact with the bodily fluids or treatment devices of someone who has Ebola, as well as other things, can cause you to contract the disease. Some symptoms are fever, weakness, pain, nausea and bleeding. The survival rate is 50%. There is no vaccine and no singular treatment, but patients with Ebola must be looked after intensively. In West Africa, Ebola is traveling extremely fast and extremely far as they do not have the correct prevention tools. They do not have access to certain medicines and sanitary devices, and they often have other rituals and beliefs that cause them to come into dangerous contact with the infected. Therefore a lot of the health care workers are getting sick themselves from their patients and dying. It was reported that because of Ebola, there have been 7,493 suspected cases and 3,439 deaths. But this number is most likely lower than what is true because some people don’t report their illness and we don’t have the tools to count all that are affected.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, cities were booming. Industry, inventions and factories were everywhere. But this meant that millions of people were moving to these cities, and it was becoming crowded. A lot of houses did not have indoor plumbing, especially slums where immigrants lived. So people dumped their waste and their trash out on the streets. Not only did this cause very dirty, disgusting streets, but this triggered a lot of diseases. There was no health care available and medicine was undeveloped, so many people got sick from this unsanitary way of life and died because of that. This is comparable to Ebola in that many are getting sick due to lack of the right tools.

  12. Throughout America’s history women haven’t had any power at all, but now they are pushing for rights and freedoms that men have because after all our home is the land of the free but is everyone really “free”. These 3 articles are about the Kansas City Royals and their run to the World Series. How they are gaining power in the MLB.
The run the Royals made to the World Series this year is amazing, after 30 years of under .500 records they suddenly are the team to beat. After not making the playoffs for such a long time they haven’t lost in their fairy tale run the World Series. Just like the Royals, in the 1800’s when women started their rights movements no one thought they could do it. The government didn’t want it to happen and lots of men across America didn’t want it to happen. With the rights women were gaining they also gained respect. The Royals also have gained respect, teams used to go into Kansas City and the coach may put some subs in because their team was such a joke, but just like women with the Royals playoff run teams won’t take them so lightly anymore because now they are playing to be the best baseball team in the world. Women and the Royals are the same in so many ways, how they are gaining power in their own worlds, how people will take them both more seriously, both of them are viewed very differently now.

  13. All the three articles are about Ebola. The first article is about how the hospital in Dallas, Texas was apologizing because they were unclear that the patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, had been to Africa. They said, “ ‘the fact that Mr. Duncan had traveled to Africa was not communicated effectively’ “. The second article is about being quarantined while having Ebola and about how two nurses had contracted the virus while treating Duncan. The third article is about how Ebola has killed more than 200 doctors, nurses, and other health care workers since June all around the world.
These three articles connect to what we learned in class because we have talked about disease when we were talking about working conditions and things like that. We talked about how there was waste in the streets back then and how that made it unhealthy and that could make you sick. Diseases back then could be spread fast because there was barely any medical care that you could receive. A lot of people could get sick from the meat because they working conditions where the meat was processed were horrible. This connects to these three articles because there was little to no medical treatment for any disease back then and there is o treatment for Ebola. People back then could catch any disease very easily. Now people can catch Ebola very easily, just by getting sneezed on or spit on. Ebola can connect to back then because there is no treatment and it can be easily spread, just like any disease back then.

The three articles talk about the new disease that came from Africa and is now here in the U.S. otherwise known as Ebola. The first article talks about Thomas Eric Dunkin an man with Ebola and how his family and friends were put into quarantine for a long time to be tested for the deadly disease. The second article talks about a Spanish nurse, who was the first person to get Ebola outside of Africa. The last article talks about Dallas, Texas and how the city s on the edge knowing that there is the virus travelling around.

These articles about Ebola relate to US history in many ways. Everyone including immigrants were moving to the cities making the cities become overcrowded. People were moved into dirty slums and were forced to have public bathrooms. Some slums were in such bad conditions there were no public bathrooms so people would throw their waste out onto the small narrow streets. This is how deadly diseases spread through the overpopulated areas. Along with dirty streets diseases also passed back then due to meat packaging processes. By eating the rotten dirty meat people got diseases and they spread, just like Ebola and how it’s affecting the US now.

  15. Golden Corral Unsanitary Food Video leaked… Meatpacking Industry Unsanitary
Golden Corral employee posted a video onto YouTube of the kitchen in Golden Corral in Port Orange, Florida. This employee thought it was unfair that their costumers couldn't see what went on behind the kitchen doors. The kitchen was overflowing with garbage and raw hamburger patties had flies swarming around it in the back by the dumpster. Ribs, gravy, casserole and more were just sitting out in the sun attracting flies to the food. All this food was put outside and by the Golden Corral dumpster. The manger of this location was fired after the video was posted. None of the food shown in the video was placed for costumers to eat. All food was thrown away the employee that posted the video took part in throwing away the food. The father of the employee offer to sell the video for $5,000 but the offer was declined.
This relates back to the progressive era when the meatpacking industry was unsanitary. The meat was from sick animals and then dyed to look fresh. Rats often made their territory on the meat and ground up with the meat. Just like how at Golden Corral the meat was exposed to the sun to rot and flies landing on the raw meat. The meat packing industry also had workers loose hands; the workers also washed their hands in the water that would be ladled into the sausage. It wasn't very clean in the meatpacking factories. The Golden Corral kitchen was a mess and full of trash. This secret of the meatpacking industry was exposed by “The Jungle” By Upton Sinclair. Just like how this Golden Corral in Port Orange, Florida was exposed by an employee. Even in 2014 we have unsanitary food issue’s, but since the Progressive Era we have the FDA act, labels, inspections and much more to make sure the food we eat is sanitary.

  16. Ebola seems to be the number one talking topic and news report because everyone is afraid of contracting this fatal disease. Ebola is a deadly disease that started among fruit-bats and then started to grow rapidly within Africa and now is gradually growing within the United States. Scientists are now looking for ways to slow down the growth of Ebola within the United States. Scientist have now turned to robotics engineering to perform some of the duties that a nurse would do to slow down the growth of Ebola. Robotic engineering is very advanced but it is still limited in the medicine field. The robot would have jobs such as spraying bleach on the exposed clothing to infect body fluids. If the technology is advanced enough then the robot could be able to perform other duties such as observing a patient with the help of a video camera and audio. It has not been decided whether this idea will be a real thing but scientist are going to meet on November 9th and disgust this topic.
Back in the Progressive Era there were progressives or people that wanted to improve American life. Progressives such as Teddy Roosevelt accomplished great things such as Jane Addams created the Hull House for poor people and immigrants. These scientists are trying to control the amount of interaction with Ebola as much as possible. These scientists are working to stop Ebola which will improve the United States health. Just like progressives they are working to change a problem within the United States. Like the progressives back then they are trying to accomplish something that could change the future of America.

    3. http://wwlp.com/2014/10/26/cdc-details-new-ebola-response-and-prep-teams/

New Rules as Ebola Comes to America – Prevention of Disease
Recently Ebola made its way to the United States. The dreadful disease was carried into our nation from West Africa, where nearly 10,000 people have been diagnosed. Following the first diagnosed Ebola victim in New York City, the governors of New Jersey and New York issued mandates requiring all medical workers returning from West Africa to participate in 21 day quarantine. Illinois has followed suit with a similar regulation. Some, such as the White House and returning nurse Kaci Hickox, disagree with the rules and view them as a violation of constitutional rights. Meanwhile, others believe it is a righteous rule that is needed to protect the American people from the disease which has killed over 5,000 globally. These new policies aren’t the only new solutions appearing. The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created new quick response teams similar to medical EMTs. Called FAST and CERT teams, these groups either prepare hospitals across the nation for a case of Ebola, or they quickly travel to areas of Ebola outbreak to handle and guide the fight against the ailment.
This current splurge in solutions to prevent Ebola connects to the time during American urbanization when disease tormented the United States. At that point, there was little to control sanitation throughout cities and streets. Thus disease ran rampant among a nation that had little medication or preparation for such devastating illnesses. Similarly to how we are now being forced to create and amend new ways of prevention and response to the Ebola disease, lawmakers then had to find ways to keep America healthy and safe. While we are currently making rules to compact Ebola and fight it swiftly, they were tasked with cleaning up the streets. Garbage collection began to occur, and sewers were built. After so long, the streets were finally clear of human waste. Most important of all, though, were public health centers which allowed people to receive treatment speedily. Overtime, quick disease preparation and response has become a major, significant theme to protect society.

  18. The Ebola virus is a virus recently brought to the United States from Africa. The first case of Ebola was brought to Dallas, Texas by a man travelling home from Liberia. He didn’t show signs of Ebola until after spending four days back in the United States. He was then but into isolation. Unfortunately, this patient died on October 8th. More people have also tested positive for Ebola. Most of these people have been nurses, doctors and healthcare workers who were exposed to the first few patients. Other cases are people who have recently been to Africa, where 4,900 people have already died from the virus. One nurse who had tested positive for Ebola and had been placed in quarantine, said that she had been disrespected and treated like a criminal. Because of this, new rules were put into place about how to properly monitor and test people returning from Africa. Health authorities have expressed concern that these strict new rules will make volunteer not want to go to help in Africa, and even President Obama has urged the governors of New York and New Jersey to reverse their new quarantine laws.
Ebola coming to the United States connects a lot to what we are learning about in history right now. We are learning about the progressives who worked to solve issues in the country. One of those issues was immigration. People from other countries were coming into the cities and making them overpopulated. The overpopulation in the slums caused unsanitary living conditions because there was no sewage or trash system. People would throw their trash out into the streets, even human waste was thrown into the streets of the slums. These unsanitary conditions ended up leading to disease and even death. This connects to the issue of Ebola because the people coming in from different places were causing disease to spread around the cities, similarly to how Ebola is coming from people who have come to America from Africa. Also, because of there being no sewage system or trash system, the slums kept getting worse and worse. This connects to the U.S. right now because they don’t have a cure for Ebola, the only way they are controlling it is by isolating the patients so they can’t spread the disease to anyone else.

  19. School Shooting in Wasthington
On October 24th, 2014, alarms started ringing at schools in Seattle at around 10:45AM. People didn’t know what was going on, as some thought it was a drill. Some heard gun shots, and some saw bloodshed. It turns out that a high school student walked into the cafeteria of Marysville-Pilchuck High School and started to open fire. The student ended up killing one student while wounding a few more people. After that, the shooter killed himself. Students around the area but not in the school were kept in classrooms for over three hours with law enforcements, and the students that were shot in Marysville were seriously injured and needed to be hospitalized. Parents went to a nearby church to eventually meet up with their children.
This relates to Chivington Massacre during 1864 in Cheyenne. Colonel John Chivington and his militia went to Cheyenne Village where the Cheyenne Indians were. The Cheyenne Indians were just doing their own thing, when all of the sudden the militia came, and a white flag was up. The militia attacked anyway, killing a bunch of people, just like how the student came in and started opening fire while the students were just eating lunch. The massacre happened, because the Indians attacked whites earlier. Many were injured in both of the cases, along with people dying.

  20. In recent new, Ferguson, Missouri is dealing with a large amount of segregation. Ferguson, Missouri is one of highly populated black communities across the United States plagued by highly concentrated poverty. Many have blamed the ones who are poverty for their misfortune and stating that the political and economic systems have no fault in this. Of cause there are two views of this issue. Some believe that the white people fled the area because of personal prejudice against African-Americans, while others simple believe that a large amount of whites left because they just simple didn’t want to live in poverty. The same goes for St. Louis. The ghetto in the central city of St. Louis was redeveloped for universities, while a large amount of the black population in the central city was shifted to inner ring suburbs similar to Ferguson. This topic reminded me of the issue of segregation between races and genders during the progressive era. In the progressive era, men and women were not treated equally. Men tended to have more benefits and advantages than the women did. Same goes for the racial inequality. During the progressive era, not all races were treated fairly. Most lived in poverty, dirty slums, didn’t have jobs, and lack of education. Immigrants had lack of education, didn’t understand English very well, and were unemployed. All in all, it was evident that there was racial segregation.
