The summary of my three articles that I choose about Michael Sam. The summary is that Michael Sam got drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. The Rams drafting him made him the first openly gay NFL player. When he got drafted there were many people who taught the player would act different around him because he’s gay. And people taught he would be a distraction to the team and in the Locker room. Also they said Michael Sam shouldn't be on a team because he gay and will be a distraction. He got cut by Rams and signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad This connects to reconstruction in that Michael Sam is treated different by others. Michael Sam was treated different by coaches, players, fan and the media just because he gay. When he the same as every other player in the NFL he just trying to make it in the NFL. That connects to how the Blacks were treated in the south during reconstruction. Also this connects to segregation of the black, because many people taught he shouldn’t be in the NFL. They taught this because he was gay and would be a distraction to the team he was the Rams then the Cowboys. Segregation, and being treated differently than other player are ways Michael Sam and being the First openly Gay player in the NFL is connect to reconstruction.
On September fifth Ukraine signed a ceasefire agreement with Russia that was supposed to take place at around six o'clock that night. The fighting in Ukraine had been going on for five months, and there was also another attempt at a ceasefire, but that only lasted 10 days. Everyone is hoping that this agreement will last much longer. Apparantley the russians were still firing on Ukraine after the ceasefire was signed, but people are saying that it is because the people firing had not yet got the news. This story relates to the Reconstruction because it is similar to the end of the civil in the sense that the Confederate army surrendered to the North. After over a year of fighting they were able to come up with a compromise peacefully. It is similar to the Russian and Ukrainian situation because of that fact that they have been fighting for months. On top of this they were also able to come out with a peaceful solution just like the Confederates and the Union. In the articles above it explained that recently a mother, Chelsi Camp fought against pit bull after it attacked her daughter, Mackenzi Plass, The mother reportedly shoved her fist in the dog’s mouth and bit a piece of its ear off. But Chelsi was able to call 911 to help her daughter to safety and shot the dog, not fatally. Later the dog was euthanized and 2 year old Mackenzi had been bitten all over and while recovering, along-side her mother, cannot be in direct sunlight for under a year. The mother believed the reason for the attack was that the pit bull smelt Chelsi’s own dog on Mackenzi. This situation is related to Reconstruction in the sense that the southerners would do anything, like bite a dog’s ear off, rather than changing their personal beliefs and accepting African Americans as equals. Like Chelsi the southerners used force to protect their ideals. They saw the African Americans as property something that was to be owned and to be worked arduously. So when the government passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment to give the African Americans freedom, the opportunity to be citizens and have basic rights, and the ability to finally vote they saw it as an attack on their 2 year old daughter (their ideals) so they put their fists in the dogs mouth (tried to deny black rights) and bit of their ears (having groups like the Ku Klux Klan and the White League maim, dismember, and kill the African Americans). But one of the only differences between Reconstruction and this peculiar event is that the dog died but African Americans are still becoming more and more equal each day.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently made a comment about women and raises. He said,”its not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will give you the right raises as you go along, Because thats good karma. It’ll come back.” This caused many women to be angry. They thought who are they to tell us that we shouldn't ask for a raise. If they don't ask for a raise, then they may never get one. There is a gap in microsoft between male wages and women wages. Women are saying microsoft should fire the CEO and replace him with someone who will take care of the wage gap. Women want to be able to ask for a raise and not rely on karma. This relates to the progressive era when women didn't have equal rights as men. they couldn't vote and that caused problems for women. They wanted a say in the country, but couldn't, because they didn't have the right to vote. They made groups like, the National Woman's Suffrage Association to help fight for their rights. Women in microsoft were told that they shouldn't ask for raises they should just sit and wait for them. This is like how women were supposed to just let whatever happen and not vote.
In recent weeks, there has been a lot of discussion, as well as controvery, about same-sex marriage. The federal government has recently legalized it in six states: Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming. This brings the total of approved to states to 32, with 15 states being legalized in this month alone. In the meantime, 3 states (Kansas, Montana, and South Carolina) are fighting to keep the ban on same-sex marriage. This symbolizes the fight for women’s suffrage in the 20th century. The slow progression of same-sex marriage rights closely resembles the fight for women’s rights in the 20th century. At one point in history, both of these topics were frowned upon, and both were not really considered any kind of possibility. They were looked at as minorities. However, as time progressed, the possibilities for these minorities to achieve their goals became more and more real. Women eventually succeeded in their campaign for rights, and same-sex couples are still fighting to get it legalized in every state. So far, however, they are getting their demands.
One of the growing issues the U.S. has been facing is the income inequalities between men and women. It was found that in 2013, the median full-time earnings for women was $39,157 compared to the median full-time earnings for men, a staggering $50,033. This displays in utmost clarity the gender pay gap, and why this is a big deal. This is a huge problem in today’s society because it prevents gender equality, since men and women who are working the same job are receiving different salaries. It was also found that women make about 77 cents for every $1 a man makes. In addition, even when accounting for differences such as educational differences, geographic differences, and race/ethnicity, there was still a 7% difference in the earnings between a man and woman. It is extremely unfair for women who are working the same job as men to be paid less. The U.S. must get rid of gender discrimination in order for an equal and fair wage. This unresolved problem must be dealt with immediately before it gets even worse than it already is. However, sources do say that progress is being made towards an equal pay, and even though the progress is slow, the gap between the wages is slowly narrowing. For instance, there is an national equal pay day annually to raise awareness of the pay gap between men and women. In this event, women and men gather to advocate equal pay. Hopefully, in the next few years, the U.S. can become a country in which the words income and gender inequality are extinct, and men and women receive equal pay for equal work.
Just like how today, women face gender inequalities, women in the Progressive Era dealt with similar issues. For example, one of the biggest gender inequalities women faced back then was the inability to vote. Women felt that if they were abiding by the laws as a citizen, then they should also have a say in the laws, by gaining the right to vote. They thought that if men and women are both citizens of the U.S., then they should both also receive the same rights as a citizen. This is similar to now, how if both men and women are working the same jobs, then it would only be fair that they be paid the same as well. So, women started to organize groups and organizations in which they would then go out and rally for the right to vote. For example, one organization was the NWSA (National Women’s Suffrage Association) which worked for the constitutional amendment to give women the right to vote. This is similar to today, because there are several groups such as the NCPE (National Committee on Pay Equity) and Women Employed, that advocate equal pay and expanding the educational and employment opportunities for women. Hopefully, just like the NWSA worked to get women the right to vote, the NCPE and Women Employed will help rid the nation of income and gender inequalities, so that women and men may one day be able to be paid equally for the same work.
The University of North Carolina has had a recent scandal come out in this past month of October. This cheating scandal has been going on for almost 18 years in order to keep their athletes on the fields. Counselors were giving the students, who weren’t passing (and would’ve been ineligible to play their sport if they were an athlete), “paper” classes which were phony classes to get a student back up to an A or B average. The 8-month investigation which took place came through with results stating over 3,000 students were given this cushion. Nearly half of the 3,000 were athletes. So here is this school, favoring their better players and favoring the students the school just wants to pass, ruining their own reputation and showing that even when the students who work hard achieve A’s and B’s, it doesn’t matter because the same grades can be given to someone who isn’t even trying. Also, most of the athletes were either football players or basketball players, and the school basketball team won 3 of their 5 NCAA championships during this era of cheating. So the question is, what will they do next?
This relates to the information we learned about the Spoils System and patronage. These particular students are getting free passes from the “paper” classes, just because they support the school with either sports or they pay a lot of money to the school for tuition. That is just like the Spoils System because the supporters of our government leaders were getting free government jobs, ahead of the people who were actually trying to get those jobs. The cheaters were getting an unfair advantage and unfair treatment, as have some of the people holding government jobs, even when they aren’t certified for it. Hopefully, this will be stopped, almost in a similar way that the Spoils System was. Civil Service Exams were the test to see if you were qualified for the federal job you applied for. A possible improvement could be more exams and pop quizzes during the class, and obviously taking out all “paper” classes.
