A big event that currently happened in the United States is the release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This relates to the theme ‘Who Had Power’ because all three of the articles I found were exaggerating about how amazing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are. In one of the articles it questions Apple about if they copied Google’s Nexus 4. The two phones have many things in common such as; they both have a 4.7-inch screen, cross-app communication, cloud photo backup, battery stats, typing suggestions, and many more things that are the same or very much alike. The articles exaggerate a little to much about how good and amazing the iPhone’s are, because I saw articles questioning the way it works and how it’s set up, such as the article that compares the iPhone 6 to Google’s Nexus 4. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus can be compared to the KKK from reconstruction. I made this connection because the iPhone 6 and the KKK have power and controlled people from their time period. During reconstruction the KKK had power over the African Americans by scaring them. The iPhone 6 is sort of like the KKK because it has the power to control people in the United States. People in the US get so wrapped up in a new phone, especially if Apple makes it, that they don’t know what they may be doing. The iPhone 6 can take control of someone just like the KKK did during reconstruction.
The Ebola Virus is one of the deadliest diseases to date, but why and how is it spreading so fast? The Ebola Virus is a disease that spreads by direct contact with an infected deceased body or direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs. It can also be indirectly spread through contact with contaminated environments. It has killed over 1,500 people in West Africa so far, and is still spreading. In order to prevent single people from spreading the disease, you must isolate the person and trace them back to the source of their case. There is no vaccination to the Ebola Virus, so that’s why it can spread so fast and easily. This connects to Reconstruction because the Ebola Virus is like the Southerners beliefs in their society. They believed so strongly that black people were evil and were so below them and that’s how they were raised. This belief spread like the Ebola Virus. There really wasn’t a cure for it, but some people could’ve been immune. The “immune” people would be the people who didn’t think that African Americans were so horrible. If the “immune” people continue to teach their beliefs to their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren the “disease” will eventually go away. Some people, however, were not immune and they fell ill to the disease and continued believing what they were taught; in a way that was like dying from the Ebola Virus.
This should be under Democratic Ideals but I realized that after I commented and wrote it but that's what it should be under.
America has mostly looked like a tree on the verge of tipping over, only supported by justice, risks, and sometimes power. Adam Matos is a Twenty Eight year old male who is currently being held in Hillsborough County Jail for quadruple murder and kidnaping his son. He stopped in Floridian Palace Hotel where he held his son and supposable waited for a bus to Key West. Four bodies were found in a road side dich near the child’s house and Matos’s ex-girlfriend reported her son being kidnaped by her ex-boyfriend took her son by holding a knife to her jugular. Herard is another Florida man who was convicted of murdering two Duncan Doughnuts employees and robbing several other stores. He told the court “Go ahead and do what you gonna do. I pretty much dare you to give me the death sentence because I’m innocent.” Herard wish was not fulfilled and now he will be spending his life in prison for the murder of Kiem Huynh. In other news the IPhone 6 came out which is predicted to sell over the last release of over fifty million phones. Apple may have a complete monopoly on smart phones with a huge release that has had some stay up until five in the morning to get their hands on the newest Apple technology. One hundred and thirty years ago was somewhat similar to what we see today. The south during the Reconstruction Era was a horrifying palace for African Americans. Racially groups, lynching, and lacking there rights. Like Matos, southerners were taking justice in to their own hands in ways like lynching. People were also fine with killing people because they’re thought to have broken the law or to avoid punishment such as Herard. The saddest part is that people were onboard with killing people by hanging, burning, shooting, or all three combined like it’s the next IPhone. History will always repeat itself and today may just be the repeat of the Reconstruction.
Summary: My first primary source is a drawing from the National Police Gazette on July 23rd, 1892. It is a drawing of the editor’s interpretation of the Battle at Homestead which happened because of the Homestead Steel Strike. It has what looks like soldiers shooting cannons at the steel factory and dead factory workers lying around. There are people at the steel factory, so that is why the soldiers are shooting at them. It is also showing a large body of water between the factory and the soldiers, which probably represents the strike and the gap it created. My second primary source is an interview from Pittsburg Post on July 8th, 1892. It is an interview of Henry Clay Frick, the leader and creator of this plan of attack. He is talking about how it had to have been done, because if they had increased the wages, the workers would’ve been in too over their heads and kept insisting they received more. Frick also said that since the prices of steel went up, along with the demands, they couldn’t afford to increase pay. They also couldn’t decrease workers because they needed the labor. The decrease in wages was the only ‘probable’ option for him. History Synthesis: These 2 documents are showing the true difference in ideals by the workers and the big business owners. This was basically a massacre, which can be a very controversial topic for each group. With the drawing, it links to the Battle of Homestead because it’s truly showing the gap between the group of workers who needed the money, and the leaders who wanted the money. Frick was so determined to keep his workers and the wages that he would do anything and everything to continue the business; even if it meant killing 9 healthy and able workers! They each had their own opinions on it, which showed through the drawing and the interview. Frick was really showing how much power he had by attacking, but the workers were showing their equal power by holding their ground.
I chose three articles recently written, addressing our upcoming election. The first article I chose addresses the difference in the number of democrats and republicans in the senate. It states reasons why a “democratic mastermind”, Cecil, believes the democrats will hold the majority for the midterm election. My second article talks about the difference between the votes of people based on their race. It says that people of color are more likely to vote for democrats than white people are. It goes into detail about how someone’s race directly effects which candidate they will vote for. My third article is about the Republican Party and the problem they may or may not have with women. It is mainly about the party not having women candidates and how women are more likely to vote democrat because of this. The article also addresses how to solve this problem. The three articles I chose address our upcoming election. The three articles I chose all address different topics but have the same focus; Our world, our nation, and our government are all very segregated whether we choose to believe it or not. Whether our segregation is directed at democrat vs. republican, women, or race it is still there. This relates to our studies about segregation in the progressive era. In the first article it discusses the difference in the number of republicans and democrats in senate. This is just like in the progressive era there were very few colored people in the government or even in positions of any power. Also, in the third article it talks about how the Republican Party, there are very few women in government; this relates to how women tried to find their place in government during the progressive era. All of these articles go to show not only how far we’ve come but how much farther we have to go to end segregation.
